What Is HYROX? A Beginner's Guide for Memphis Athletes

HYROX is the rare fitness race you can actually prepare for, because the format never changes. Here is exactly what it is, and what it takes to finish one.

The format

A HYROX race is eight 1-kilometer runs, each one followed by a single functional workout station. You run, you work, you run again — eight times through, in the same order, at every race in the world.

That consistency is the whole point. Unlike a race where the workout is a surprise, you can rehearse a HYROX from start to finish months before you enter one.

The eight stations

In order, every race:

  • SkiErg — 1,000m
  • Sled Push — 50m
  • Sled Pull — 50m
  • Burpee Broad Jumps — 80m
  • Rowing — 1,000m
  • Farmer's Carry — 200m
  • Sandbag Lunges — 100m
  • Wall Balls

Who it's for

Runners who want strength. Lifters who want an engine. People who have never raced anything and want a finish line to train toward. Divisions exist for open, pro, doubles and relay, so the entry point is genuinely wide.

You also don't have to race at all. HYROX-style training builds cardiovascular endurance, functional strength and work capacity whether or not you ever register.

How to start near Memphis

Train the format with people who coach it. Bluff City Performance is an Official HYROX Training Club in Collierville, roughly 25-30 minutes east of Memphis, with coach-led classes Monday through Friday at 5:30pm and 24/7 member access for the work in between.

Your first class is free, and the coach will walk you through the format before it starts.
